Can a student move into Algebra I in grade 7 if they are not in Math Prime?
Math Prime is the advanced level of sixth-grade math currently offered at HUES. It moves at a faster pace than Math 6 and covers all of the sixth-grade student math standards along with several standards from grade 7. This link gives a comparison between both courses. Starting with the 2024-2045 school year, a student’s eligibility to take Math Prime in grade six will be based on their performance in Math 5. Students who finish Math 5 with a course grade of at least 95% will be eligible to take Math Prime in sixth grade while students who finish Math 5 with a course grade below 95% will be eligible to take Math 6 in sixth grade.
Because of the math-science teaching link at HUES, a student’s math level can not be changed once the school year begins. This means that a student will be in either Math 6 or Math Prime for the entire school year.
Does this new program change the criteria for 7th-grade Honors?
Math placement in an honors-level seventh grade math course is based on a student’s course grade in sixth-grade math. There are several ways to qualify for Algebra I Honors or Pre-Algebra Honors in grade 7. Students who finish Math Prime in grade 6 with a course grade of at least 86% qualify to take Algebra I Honors in grade 7. Students who finish Math 6 with a course grade of at least 98% will also qualify to take Algebra I Honors in grade 7. Math Prime students who finish with a course grade of 70%-85% and Math 6 students who finish with a course grade of 90%-97% will both qualify to take Pre-Algebra Honors in grade 7.
