• What to expect as a 4th grade math student:

Early on in the year, there is some review from 3rd grade.  Our focus will be on place value and some geometry.  Place value will play a very important part of 4th grade math.  It is the basis for many strategies that we learn in the future, such as, partial products and partial quotients.

In a few months, we will start some fraction work.  We'll cover the basics, like recognizing a fraction, drawing a fraction, and then move into making equivalent fractions, adding/subtracting fractions and evenutally multiplying a fraction by a whole number.  You'll also be able to change an improper fraction into a mixed number.

Multiplication of 2 and 3 digit numbers will be taught using a strategy called partial products.  4th grades students are required to use this method.  If you are being taught another way at home, that's great, but I will ask you to use partial products.  It will show that you have a great understanding of the value of digits within a number.  For example: 45 * 8:  You'll understand that 40 is multiplying 8 and 5 is also multiplying 8.

Eventually we will divide 3 and 4-digit numbers using a stategy called partial quotients.  Again, this will show an understanding of the value of digits.

Knowing multiplication facts will be super important from now on in your educational career.  That is why we will do a math log to show that you are practicing your facts.  Once you prove to me that you know them all, you will not have to do your log any longer....So make sure you are practicing right now :-)
