World Language Proficiency Levels
What can our students do with language and intercultural understanding in our world language classes?
Our teachers use the NCSSFL-ACTFL CAN-DO Statements so that each student knows what s/he can do at each level of study. From elementary to high school each student moves from the novice to intermediate level. With continued studies in college and in life, students can move to the advanced and superior levels of language and intercultural proficiency.
Each level is divided into low, mid and high. At the novice low, mid and high levels, students are parrots. Students rely on practiced or memorized words, phrases, simple sentences and questions. At the intermediate low mid and high levels, students become survivors. They can engage in conversation on familiar topics, create sentences and series of sentences. They can also ask and answer a variety of questions.
In order to qualify for the New Jersey State Seal of Biliteracy, students must demonstrat an intermediate-mid level of communication in interpretive, interpersonal and presentational modes of communication.
Be sure to ask your child to share with you his/her ePortfolio. Each student uploads evidence of what s/he can do each year. Each student uses this evidence to reflect on where they are on the proficiency guidelines and set goals for how they will advance his/her learning.
