This course is activity-centered with emphasis on speaking and listening. Spanish is in constant use in the classroom. The focus is on building a working vocabulary, including common idioms and phrases.  Students learn words and very basic and relevant grammatical structures. Teachers also introduce elementary principles of reading and writing. Interest is also stimulated through the study of the customs and day-to-day activities of people whose native language is Spanish.

This course emphasizes the improvement of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Simplified Mandarin. Students pay special attention to the introduction of reading and writing of Chinese characters.  Mandarin is the language used in the classroom. Students continue to improve their working vocabulary along with additional common idioms and phrases. The teachers emphasize precision in the use of more words and grammatical structures. A study of Chinese culture is an integral part of this course.

Students communicate meaning in realistic situations and carry out functions that are necessary for multicultural patterns found in Chinese language and traditions.
