MSW,LCSW 8th grade Student Assistant Specialist
Ms. Melissa Barna
I have been a social worker for over 30 years, and enjoy every minute of this wonderful profession! I first started my career at St. Peter’s Medical Center as a Perinatal Social Worker, who worked primarily with mothers and their children, as well as working in a clinic with pregnant teenagers. Then, while raising two children of my own, I worked part-time as a Juvenile Crisis Counselor with the Woodbridge Police Department. It was when my children were older (now 25 and 27), that I decided to switch gears. Since I still wanted to work with children, I decided to accept a maternity leave position at Bowne-Monroe as “The Feelings Teacher”. The following year I was hired at Churchill as the Student Assistant Specialist, and have been here for 13 years!
I enjoy meeting with students individually, in groups, and in the classroom. I also have a private counseling practice where I continue to see adolescents and adults. In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, reading, binge-watching Netflix, the beach, and spending time with my family and my newly adopted 9-year-old boxer, Bugsy.
