•  Guide to Ms. Whelan's Lanugage Arts Class

Hello, welcome to Ms. Whelan's  ILA and Verbal GATE class! I am so excited to meet you. This year, you will learn about specific reading and writing skills to make you the best possible sixth-grade reader and writer that you can be! I know it will not be an easy journey, but through hard work and perseverance, you can accomplish anything.

ILA (Integrated Language Arts) consists of three main components: Reading, Writing and Word Study. In addition, students will work on mastering skills related to Speaking and Listening. The Reading and Writing units follow a workshop model that allows students to receive individualized instruction in addition to whole-group and small-group instruction.

    Expectations:

    • BE RESPECTFUL – respect yourself, your classmates, the faculty, and the building. Treat others the way you wish to be treated.
    • BE PREPARED – have all of your ILA materials with you each day. Be in your seat when the late bell rings and make sure your homework is copied and you are quietly working on the Do Now activity.
    • TRY YOUR BEST - No one is perfect, but I do ask that you try your best and show effort. Pay attention, participate, and ask questions when needed.

    Absences:

If you are absent, you have as many days as you are out to complete and turn in assignments. Just because you are absent, it does not mean that you do not have to complete the work that you have missed. Make sure you check the Google Classroom for your missing items.
