Plot: David Pelzer’s life was once perfect with his family until it turns into a nightmare in a few short months. His mother has changed from a loving mother into a cruel master. She constantly abuses her son and enjoys torturing him. Everyday, David must do the house chores and must complete them under a certain time limit if he wants to get food in his stomach. He is forced to ear the scrapes of food that even a dog would not eat. This small child lives his life as “a prisoner of war”. Forced to grow up, David must find ways to help him to survive in his own house. This abuse is a true story and has become the third worst case of child abuse in California.
Why read? The book A Child Called “It” is a tragic story of a child’s life. It gives the reader an insight on child abuse and exposes him or her on the unawareness child abuses. It informs the reader of the horrid experiences that some children face in their daily lives. Also, the context is not difficult to understand; it can be read by adolescents and by adults. Overall, it teaches the reader the will of survival and the will to move on
