Plot:
Dicey Tillerman comes from a poor family consisting of her mother,
two younger brothers and a younger sister. They are on their way to visit an
aunt in Connecticut in hopes of living with her. On their way they stop at
the mall. The mother asks Dicey to watch the children in the car while she
goes into the mall. However, after many hours, even overnight, the mother
never returns. Dicey realizes that they have been abandoned and decides to
continue the trip to the aunt’s house on foot. When they arrive at their
aunt’s house they find that their aunt has passes away and their older
cousin that lives there is not very welcoming. As a result, they decide to
leave and head south to find their grandmother. Once again they are
traveling the distance on foot. Dicey has to find odd jobs along the way to
support her family. Why
read? This is
my favorite book of all time. When I was in seventh grade my reading teacher
gave this book to me as a Christmas present and it has been my favorite ever
since. It is a timeless story that many generations can relate to. I love
the strength that Dicey shows against many odds. She never gives up. I have
suggested this book to both boys and girls and found that they all love it.
The sequel is Dicey’s Song.
Why
read? I loved
this book for it’s simplicity in writing style.
Even though the concept behind the book is totally creative and imaginative,
the book is short, easy to read, and captivating. I love Lois Lowry and this
book certainly did not disappoint. A great book for anyone who has ever
dreamed of anything! Enjoy!

This book is historical fiction. It takes place in the early 1900s in
New York City. Margaret Rose Nolan is a poor Irish immigrant. Her family
took the long boat ride to America looking for better opportunities. Rose is
determined to succeed in America. However, there are many obstacles that she
has to overcome first. When she arrives in America with her mother and
father, her slightly younger sister, and her baby brother they have to pass
the medical exam at Ellis Island before they can enter the country. The
family doesn’t think this will be a problem until the medical examiner tells
them that the baby has an eye infection and is not allowed into the country.
As a result, they baby has to return back to Ireland. The entire family can
not afford to go back, so Margaret ‘s father goes home with the baby in
hopes that the baby will recover and he can save enough money for them to
come back. Margaret, whose name gets shortened to Rose at Ellis Island, is
left to enter America with only her mother and her sister. When the sisters
finally find a job, at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, a devastating fire
forces them and their new friends to fight for their lives. Surrounded by
pain, tragedy, and ashes, Rose wonders if there is anything left for her in
this great land of America. Why
read? After
reading the first few chapters of this book I didn’t want to put it down. It
was like a movie that I didn’t want to end. The story is told in first
person by the main character, Rose. I was able to connect with her because I
wanted to see how she was going to overcome the obstacles. I loved the
strength that Rose showed against many odds and how she never gave up. Also,
I learned a lot about what it was like to be an immigrant. I have suggested
this book to many students and found that they enjoyed it also.
Reviewers note: If
you like this book, I think you will also like the historical fiction novel

Isabella Swan has just moved to the town of Forks, Washington. She
despises it there, and is convinced nothing interesting will happen.
However, then she meets Edward Cullen. They fall in love, but they are kept
apart by Edward's dark secret: he is a vampire, and the smell of Bella's
blood is particularly attractive to him. Why
read? Edward
and Bella are like modern-day Romeo and Juliet because they are kept apart.
Edward tries to keep away from Bella but he can't. Also, Bella is not afraid
of him or his vampire family. Reviewer’s
note: This book is my favorite book. The second book, New
Moon, is out, and the third book, Eclipse, is coming out in
August.
Plot:
In New Moon, Bella Swan is continuing her almost perfect [and quite
dangerous] relationship with Edward Cullen. Being in love with a vampire is
not the only event that is on Bella’s mind. As her birthday is coming
closer, she is tormented about the idea of growing older than Edward. On the
day of her surprise party, things don’t go as planned and the party ends up
a disaster. To protect Bella, Edward and the Cullen family are planning on
moving away to a different town. In addition, since vampires can’t age, the
Cullen family has stayed in one place for way too long. But the thing that
they don’t know is an even greater danger is upon them, and is threatening
on ending Bella and Edward’s relationship. Why
read? I really
loved this book and I think you will too. The plot is a
lot different than what I expected. But to fully understand this
book, you'll need to read Twilight first.

Plot:
This book is about a “clique” and how they all live and have drama in
their lives. There are six main characters in this book, Massie, Alicia,
Kristin, Nina, Claire, and Devin. Nina is Alicia’s cousin that has visited
from Spain. Massie gets completely jealous over Nina’s good looks and charm,
and she is mad because she got her man. Massie believes he is very
interested in her now, even though she regrets the fact she ever came to
this country. After all, to solve the problem Massie and her friends make
nasty traps for her to just fall right into. Massie wants Alicia’s furiously
mean backstabbing cousin to move back to Spain, she could not take the
jealousy anymore. Never ever in Massie’s life has she ever been the second
most popular girl in school, now she is, and Nina is first on the top of the
popularity list. Alicia is even getting sick of her own flesh and blood.
Claire is the least of Massie’s problem, since they were moving into her
house, things have been going crazy. Massie learned to love Claire, like a
sister and helped her out with her fashion problems. Why
read? You
should read this book because they are so true to real life, especially how
backstabbing friends can really be. There is a whole series, but I chose to
do the fourth book because it was interesting when Nina came along and
barged into Massie’s personal life. Reviewer’s
