What are our facilities issues? Our middle school and elementary schools are overcrowded. Since 1995 our student population has increased by 1800 students. In grades K-7 there are an additional 864 students--that is 1 1/2 times the enrollment in our largest elementary school. Our middle school and elementary schools range in age from 32 to 55 years old. All original systems need to be replaced. Just as homeowners must often undertake major upgrades to older homes, we must address these aging facilities. How has the district dealt with facilities issues historically? Past referendums: Thanks to a state grant and a positive outcome on a bond referendum in the fall of 2000, we were able to fully renovate and expand Churchill Junior High School to meet the needs of our 8th and 9th graders. Two previous referendums, one in 1993 and the other in 1996 failed. The failure of these two referendums led to two lease-purchases:
What is being done to address our current facilities issues? After a year-long study, the Board of Education has approved a two-phased plan to address current facilities needs. Phase 1: December 14, 2004 bond referendum to address the most critical needs. The state has approved plans for the construction of a nearly new middle school. (The 1996 addition will be preserved.) The new facility will accommodate up to 1700 students. Central and Lawrence Brook elementary schools will be renovated and expanded. When completed there will be adequate room to meet the educational needs of students in these schools and all mechanical systems will be replaced. The three buildings will meet modern building codes and be ADA compliant. What will Phase 1 cost? The project cost is $106.1 million. A large state grant of $24.7 million reduces the local cost to $81.4 million. For the average taxpayer, this is $140 per $100,000 of assessed value per year. Phase 2: Fall 2006 bond referendum to address needs at the other six elementary schools. Please review the links below for more information.
