Character Counts: Hammarskjold Middle School values good character and has initiated the Character Counts Program as a means of developing and enhancing positive character traits in our students. Character traits such as trustworthiness, responsibility, caring, and fairness are discussed every Monday during our lunch/study periods. "Character Mondays" present our students with real-life situations in which they are faced with making a decision and then justifying the reasons for that decision. Students exhibiting exemplary character are recognized each month by their House teachers and at the end of the school year at a special awards reception. School day hours are as follows:

Late Bus 3:45 pm

Our Mission: Hammarskjold Middle School is committed to providing all of our students with an optimum opportunity to grow intellectually, socially, physically, and emotionally. Special emphasis is given to cooperation with and concern for others. Students are encouraged to question, explore, and create. Striving for excellence is stressed and recognized as being critical to the development of a positive attitude toward life. Above all, we want our students to possess dignity and self-worth, and to value the unique worth of each individual.

In order to accomplish our mission, our learning environment will provide:

  • a challenging curriculum with flexibility to meet the needs of each student

  • a variety of teaching strategies to address all learning styles

  • students with relevant learning experiences which will enhance their intellectual, physical, social, and emotional needs

  • students with an integrated approach to learning

  • students with a nurturing, orderly, and safe environment to help ensure a smooth transition from the elementary school to the middle school, and from the middle school to the junior high school

  • students with a school environment which promotes the development of strong character, risk-taking, creativity, and self-discovery.

All of our classes at Hammarskjold Middle School are heterogeneously grouped so that students can learn to appreciate one another's strengths and work cooperatively toward a common goal. A combination of both independent and cooperative learning strategies will be used to implement the curriculum. Throughout all curriculum areas, our major focus is to equip our students with the necessary critical thinking and problem-solving skills to facilitate future learning.

The staff and parents of Hammarskjold Middle School will continue to work cooperatively to provide an educational program of excellence for all of our students.

During the 1995-96 school year, Hammarskjold Middle School was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Hammarskjold Middle School will maintain this distinction for the next five years.

Beginning with the 2008 - 2009 school year, the school district will implement an after school program for students in grades K - 7.
