K-12 Mathematics Program Evaluation - Complete Report
Mathematics Curriculum Standard Guide

The elementary mathematics program is based on objectives determined for each grade level. The objectives encompass a wide range of mathematics as the curriculum in grades K-12 continues to move toward alignment with the Standards for Curriculum and Evaluation developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and with New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The major content areas are the use of numbers and geometry, data analysis, measurement and problem solving.

A hands-on activities-based curriculum is used in all the elementary schools, along with manipulative materials that help children develop strong conceptual knowledge and provide them with concrete illustrations of the skills they are learning.

During grades six and seven, the mathematics program begins the transition to pre-high school mathematics. The study of pre-algebra occurs in seventh grade. Most students move to Algebra I in eighth grade. Some students qualify for Algebra I in seventh grade through the Gifted and Talented Math Prime program.

At all grade levels, students who fall below district and state standards are placed in the basic skills improvement program, which is designed to help them become better prepared for success in mathematics.

In grades nine through twelve, there is a broad range of courses. Students who have not yet decided if they want to go to college may choose courses that emphasize problem solving using algebra, geometry and data analysis skills through real-life applications.

The program for college bound students ranges from the minimum three-year sequence of pre-calculus mathematics up to five-and-six-year sequences that include a year of college-level calculus. Among the courses are algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus and discrete mathematics. Advanced placement courses in Calculus AB, Calculus BC and Statistics are also available for qualified students.
