Course offerings in this program are designed to promote basic living skill education and training, social skills and employment skills for adults who have a developmental disability. The program runs from September to June. Download a registration form

Eligibility requirements: Residents of Middlesex County, age 18 and over, who are registered with the State of New Jersey, Division of Developmental Disabilities. Each participant may enroll in one evening of classroom/community instruction and one evening of social/recreational programming.

Course 001
Applied Basic Skills
Monday/Wednesday
Prerequisite: Mastery of Minimum Basic Skills

This course includes a combination of skill and practical career training with hands-on involvement in the program's refreshment stand. Areas to be covered include:

Use of coins Inventory skills
Job-related social behavior Preparation of snacks
Use of cash register and microwave oven Set-up, maintenance & clean-up
Group work (team effort) Customer service

Basic Skills/Communication Skills

This course is designed to develop a variety of practical communication and mathematical skills to enhance daily living. Areas to be covered include:

Time concepts Budgeting/Checking account
Basic reading Verbal & written communication
Social behavior Telephone communication
Community awareness

Basic Weight Training

Improve your flexibility and tone your muscles using a variety of weights and fitness equipment. Areas to be covered include:

Body awareness Building strong bones and a healthy heart

The Craft Place
Monday/Wednesday

Practice communication skills while developing a hobby. Students are exposed to a variety of craft materials and have an opportunity to create a variety of handcrafted items for personal use or to give as gifts. Student participation is emphasized.

Exercise/Music/Dance

This three-segment course combines exercise and dance movements with a variety of musical styles. Areas to be covered include:

Walking for fitness Rhythm and movement

Money Skills

This real life applications class will help you improve your money handling skills and will include occasional field trips. Areas to be covered include:

Coin recognition Purchasing with coupons
Making change Use of store advertisements

Reading Improvement

Improve your basic reading skills through individual and small group instruction including spelling, reading, oral presentations, writing and comprehension skills. Limited use of specialized computer programs will be included.

Self Advocacy Group

Learn about your rights and develop confidence in your abilities through peer group discussion and activities. Students are encouraged to discuss topics affecting their daily lives. A staff advisor will be available to assist in developing an agenda and to provide support.

Learn basic shopping and food preparation skills by alternating weekly shopping and cooking experiences. Areas to be covered include:

Table setting and table manners Safety procedures
Grocery shopping at local supermarkets Menu planning/Recipes
Clean-up and kitchen maintenance Personal hygiene procedures
Cooking for your family and friends Shopping for your home
