Educating the whole child through student clubs and athletic programs continues to be important to us. Unfortunately, with the defeat of the 2006-2007 school budget, the district was forced to make significant cuts and some very difficult decisions had to be made. Among those was a reduction in funds for non-mandated clubs and activities. In order for us to maintain our valuable and enriching co-curricular activities, while at the same time maintaining a balanced budget, students will be charged a non-refundable fee for participation in extra curricular activities. The non-refundable fee for joining each club will be $15. In addition any costs associated with the club will be paid for directly by students or through fund raising. Download the club/activity fee form.

Art Enrichment
The art club’s purpose is to extend the students’ skills from regular art class. This hands-on program takes place on Tuesdays before school. The art club sensitizes students to the art and design surrounding them. Ms. Brewer, the art teacher, helps the students by extending their ability to learn and design. They are currently delving into the realm of cyber art and are utilizing programs available in the computer lab.

Chorus
Provides opportunities for students to demonstrate knowledge achieved in music classes by performing in choral groups, presenting concerts for community events, PTA programs, etc.

Central School has a chorus that meets with Mrs. Weiss, the music teacher. We currently have 90 students which are fourth and fifth graders. Anyone who likes to sing can join. There are two concerts, one in winter and one in spring.

The purpose of this activity is for students to gain experience in singing in a large group, in learning more about how to use their voices, and in singing a variety of songs.

Student membership in the chorus helps develop confidence and experience in working together. It also helps build school spirit.

Computer
Provides special out of the classroom computer activities for motivated students. Expands student knowledge of computer technology.

The fifth grade students in the computer club assist in maintaining Central School’s web site. The members of the Central School Computer Club include any fourth and fifth grade students who are willing to participate in group meetings every Tuesday and Thursday, during recess time.

Students in the computer club interview teachers and students about different activities going on in the school. The students put the interview in paragraph form and take pictures with a digital camera to enhance their stories. The students then help Ms. Blum to place their stories and pictures on the web page.

Members of the computer club not only use the digital camera, but they also learn to manipulate and enhance the images using various techniques. They   also learn to insert and use the resulting images in other programs, too. Some of the programs they are learning include Adobe Photoshop, Printshop Deluxe, and Flying Colors.

Early Act
Provides students with an opportunity to work together toward service and international understanding. Sponsored by the Rotary Club, it offers development of both leadership skills and teamwork.

Friendship Club
Provides an opportunity for special education and regular education students to interact. Activities include lunches, special school events and extra curricular activities.

Homework Club
Provides opportunities for students to work cooperatively in small groups to study and complete homework assignments. (No fee)

Intramurals
Includes sports activities which serve as an extension of the physical education program. Skill development and game activity are stressed.

Sports activities that serve as an extension of the physical education program are included as part of this club. Skill development and game activity are stressed. The intramural club also provides opportunities for building character, self-esteem, and good sportsmanship.

Members of this club take part in the East Brunswick Foul Shooting Contest.

Math Team
Provides an opportunity for 4th and 5th grade students to investigate and use alternate strategies to solve math problems.

Peer Mediation
Provides students with a peer mediation program based on voluntary participation in a structured process in which two neutral student mediators assist two disputing parties who are trying to reach agreement.

Central School now has a Peer Mediation Club! Ms. Scelzo and Mrs. Ascher are working with a group of fifth graders who are learning about conflict resolution skills. The students, who were selected by their peers, are being taught how to resolve disputes between other children. The goal of peer mediation is to work out differences between people in a constructive manner.

The fifth graders will be responsible for facilitating the mediation. They must remain impartial during the process. The children who are involved in the conflict will be given the opportunity to talk about their feelings and brainstorm possible solutions to the confrontation. The mediators will help the disputants come to an agreement that they can carry out. The mediators have agreed to keep the information they hear confidential. Because of this, the student body will be able to trust the mediators. Overall, students will come to understand conflict and develop skills to help them deal with conflicts peacefully.

Peer Tutoring
Assists students in problem subject areas under the direction of school personnel.

Peer Tutors, Inc. is a volunteer group of 90 very dedicated fourth and fifth graders, who are recommended for the program by their teachers and interviewed by their advisor, Mrs. Apoldo. Fourty-five peer tutors help younger children during the first two semesters, and the remaining fourty-five peer tutors help during the final two semesters of the school year.

They assist younger Central School students who need extra help by working for one or two twenty-minute periods per week during recess. The peer tutors are responsible for any assignments given to them while they are tutoring. They are all patient, kind, fair, punctual, and very polite. Some of their peer tutoring duties include math, story writing, reading to or with their students, science projects, and any other jobs their teachers give them. They keep schedule sheets and assignment records.

Recorder Ensemble
This Musical group is designed to build on the skills learned in class, and enrich their experiences in a performance venue.

Safety Patrol
Works with East Brunswick Police and school personnel to promote school safety by providing student patrols.

The opportunity to be a Safety Patrol is a privilege given to the fifth grade students at Central School. Under the direction of Ms. Rizkalla, all safety patrol students must adhere to the "Safety Patrol Bill of Rights" throughout the year. Their responsibilities include being at their assigned posts daily, setting a good example, and inspiring good citizenship.

Safety patrols take part in a variety of activities throughout the year. Organizational meetings and peer training are scheduled on a quarterly basis, and monthly meetings involve training in conflict resolution. The highlight at the end of the year is the Safety Patrol Roller-Skating Party held at Rollermagic in South Amboy. Safety patrols in all the elementary schools in East Brunswick come together and enjoy a morning of roller-skating and refreshments provided by the East Brunswick Police Department as a way of saying "Thanks for a job well done!"

Student Council
Plans and implements school service projects that benefit the community. Coordinates school activities, student government, promotes school spirit. Serves as an extension of the social studies units on community and civics.

The officers of the Student Council are elected by the students in grades four and five with a general election. The representatives/delegates are voted upon in the individual homerooms.

This body plans and implements school projects that benefit the school and the community, promotes school spirit and student government, and serves as an extension of the social studies curriculum on community, civics, and government.

Some club activities include Central School Carnival, Food Drive for the East Brunswick Food Bank, Hurricane Victims’ Relief, letter writing to Armed Forces overseas, Spirit Week, Eyes for the Needy, Campbells Labels for Education, Central School Store, and other projects that arise from the student body and community.

Students Against Violating the Environment (SAVE)
Extends knowledge learned in the science classes by disseminating information on environmental problems and solutions throughout the school and community. Promotes environmental protection by implementing various programs.

Students are extending their knowledge in science and promoting environmental protection by implementing various programs. Programs include a community clean-up sponsored by the East Brunswick Recycling Program, a school wide clean-up, planting around the school, Arbor Day activities, Earth Day functions, and taking part in the water monitoring program with the East Brunswick Environmental Commission.

New projects are introduced frequently. The group works with the Central School PTA and the school community on a number of these activities.

Video Newsmakers
Provides students with an opportunity to produce, direct, write, and perform in video cassette news broadcasts.

Lights, Camera, Action! The Central School Broadcasting Company is in production under the direction of Ms. Smith and her crew. Each day, the fifth grade students enchant the school with their version of the morning announcements. They broadcast school news, club meetings, daily weather reports, lunch choices, and more!

Each fifth grader will have the chance to serve as a broadcaster this year. The most exciting part is when the lights go down, the camera is on, and the action starts! Broadcasters read from cue cards just like real news people. The fifth grade students are gaining valuable writing, editing, speaking, and producing skills. Thanks to the East Brunswick School District and Board of Education, these children are enjoying an experience of a lifetime!
